Well, I’m a day late and a dollar short, but I couldn’t let Valentine’s Day pass completely unacknowledged.
Seeing Valentine’s décor go up in stores – which usually happens around Christmas time these days – I’m always reminded of my childhood. Pink and red hearts everywhere are as nostalgic for me as snowmen and Santa Claus. There are several reasons for that:
When I was a little girl, I had a mini pink Christmas tree. I was always sad to take it down after December, so my mom and I devised the idea of turning it into a Valentine’s tree. We made all kinds of little ornaments for it with paper and buttons. I was absolutely thrilled to have a tree well into February.
The first Pinterest project we made was a pink wreath made from ribbon and one of those fluffy feather boas they sell with the kids’ craft supplies at Hobby Lobby. It hung on my closet door for quite a few years.
I loved anything soft and cuddly as a child (let’s be honest, I still do), and one of my favorites for many years was a big, pink, heart-shaped pillow, which I very unoriginally named “Pink Heart Pillow.” Of course, Pink Heart Pillow collected many friends of various sizes throughout my childhood.
If you know me, you know pink is not usually my go-to color, but during Valentine’s season I love seeing it. There will always be a bit of that bubbly little girl in me who gets excited at the sight of pink sparkles in February.
In honor of Valentine’s Day this year, I wanted to share some favorites from the vintage postcards and hankies I got from my great-grandma.
And finally, this one I saw in an antique store but didn't end up getting:
Happy late Valentine's Day, dear readers!
